Zug Castle

As early as the 9th century the Counts of Lenzburg had the first secular building constructed on what is today the castle area. Following this a village with the name Zuige or Ziuge was erected nearby.
As early as the 9th century the Counts of Lenzburg had the first secular building constructed on what is today the castle area. Following this a village with the name Zuige or Ziuge was erected nearby.

Later, the castle area was owned by the Kyburgs, then the Habsburgs and finally by various private residents of Zug. Each owner successively enlarged, improved and altered the building to suit the fashion of the time, so that we can now enjoy 700 years of building history! It is worth noting the various uses to which the castle has been put: bastion – dynastic residence – private house – museum. And now, as a museum, the castle houses a collection of historic exhibits from both town and canton.
